Course Description

10-660-110 ELECTRONICS 1: DIODES-BASIC ...introduction to the characteristics and usage of semiconductor diodes in rectifiers and linear power supplies. Special diodes and diode circuits are also considered. (Prerequisite: 10-660-105, DC 2: Circuits or Instructor Approval; Electrical Engineering students are recommended to take 10-660-106, DC 3: Circuit Theorems prior to/or at the same time as this course.)

What will I learn?

  1. Distinguish the characteristics of specialty types of diodes
  2. Analyze circuits using three diode models
  3. Calculate current, voltage and regulation in Zener diode circuits
  4. Calculate ripple using capacitor and inductor/capacitor filters
  5. Analyze a complete regulated power supply
  6. Assemble diode circuits following a circuit diagram
  7. Expired: Describe the formation of a PN junction in doped semiconductor material
  8. Expired: Describe the characteristics of specialty types of diodes

Class Notes

  • IMPORTANT: Each class consists of lecture delivered in person plus additional time in the Tech Hall lab, Room ET129 or the Mech Hall lab, Room ET120 during the posted open lab times. Plan approximately 30 hours to complete both portions of this class.
  • This course requires purchase of a parts kit in ET129.
  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Tech Hall Lab, Room ET129, is open Mon-Thurs 8am-8pm; Fridays 8am-3pm; Saturdays 8am-1pm. The Lab will observe all College closure holidays and breaks.
